The evaluation of wine samples received at the 23rd International Economy Fair, Mostar 2022 was held in the premises of the Mostar Fair.
The evaluation was performed by an international commission composed of licensed tasters from the entire region, chaired by prof. Dr. Bernard Kozina from the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Zagreb. This year, about 100 samples of red and white wines arrived from Herzegovina, Macedonia, Serbia, Croatia and Hungary were evaluated.
Wines were evaluated according to the established method of 100 positive points of the International Organization of Vine and Wine (OIV), which is accepted worldwide. According to the rules of evaluation of the Mostar Fair, wine samples that receive an average rating from the committee above 90 points out of 100 possible, receive a large gold medal.
Knowledge and quality
The evaluation of wine samples once again showed that the wines from these areas are of very high quality.
- I am now in an ungrateful position compared to the first years when I had the right and need to point out the problems that Herzegovinian winemakers face and go through. Unlike those times, today I can only say words of praise and wish all of us, and the winemakers, that the level of knowledge and quality of wine that they give, remains - said prof. Kozina.
One of the 12 members of the commission was Dr. Tihomir Prusina, the first doctor of oenology from Herzegovina.
We are a well-established team. I have 37 years of this work behind me. This year we had very good wines žilavka and blatina, but I must point out a few red wines of the trnjak variety that fascinated us. We just said ‘wow’, that’s it. It is about the harvests from 2020 to 2016. We should be satisfied with our wines in Herzegovina, žilavka and blatina, and we have a lot of trnjak lately. It is a forgotten variety, and today a very potent one that can be worn side by side with the world's best varieties. We just have to work on improving those varieties of wine. Let me remind you, wine is born in the vineyard, and then the technologist does what the final product needs. If you get high quality grapes, you will have safe and extremely high-quality wine - said Dr. Prusina.
The names of the winners will be known and soon published on the website of the Mostar Fair, while the awards will be presented to winemakers at the Mostar Economy Fair, on Wednesday, April 6, 2022.
The Mostar Fair will be held from April 5 to 9, 2022, and the partner country is Hungary
